Riot Raffle…a great cause…& some very lovely stuff you could win!

Good morning all :-) I hope you had a lovely weekend.

Today I would like to introduce you to one of my very lovely Twitter friends who has started something quite remarkable, something good, something very worthwhile, something you can help with and benefit from at the same time!

I’m not going to say any more, instead I’m going to hand you over to the very lovely Zoe Grant from Zoeanddrew

How it all began
After watching the news and seeing the destruction on the streets of our capital city on the night of Monday 8 August much of country was left in shock. On the Tuesday morning I checked with friends in London, many I had made through Twitter, that they were safe, some witnessing first hand the mindless vandalism of their communities. I read tweets from Riotcleanup who were busy rallying support to reclaim their city and start the massive clean up. People flocked to help, armed with brooms, determined to help.
Feeling helpless as I do not live close enough to pop along and help and realising I wasn’t the only person feeling this way I had an idea of a raffle. With a large network of designer makers, artists and creative people I hoped they would support my idea. So I wrote a blogpost and tweeted the link and offers started to come in. With in 18 hours over 30 independent businesses had offered prizes and fully supported my idea. We now had a twitter hashtag and through our social media networks word spread and more support and prizes were offered.
The next step was to find a charity to support. As small business owners we wanted the money raised to help the many shopkeepers who had lost their businesses or had their shops looted and damaged in the riots. The Retail Trust seemed like the perfect choice and after speaking with them I was assured that 100% of our donation would be used to help these shopkeepers and not the big retail chains who could afford to rebuild and restock.
Now the planning had to be done. Riot Raffle was becoming a major fundraiser for the victims of the riots throughout our cities. Again the power of twitter stepped in and Zoe Brown , Managing Director of B Websites, offered to help. B Websites have built this website, organised the hosting and purchase of the domain name, aswell as making the template available to be downloaded and used by other people when they make a donation to Riot Raffle.
So we had a website, we had prizes, we now needed a logo. There were lots of suggestions of design companies and one clearly stuck out, Who Ate My Crayons. Tia, the designer behind Who Ate My Crayons, is popular within the twitter design community and has created badges for several #sbs winners in Theo Paphitis’s weekly selection of small businesses to retweet.
Riot Raffle is about a creative community coming together to support other independent businesses in a time of crisis. Today we have over 80 independent businesses donating prizes for Riot Raffle. We hope that you will support us in raising a lot of money to help Retail Trust assist the many shopkeepers who were victims of the riots and buy a ticket, or ten!

Investing in Your Investment

When you are planning your wedding, inevitably an enormous amount of thought, time and money goes into the process. Sometimes this means years of planning; and a very large financial commitment.
Eventually, after a lot of research and time on your part you make the final decisions and choose the suppliers you think will help make your big day everything you are hoping for. You pay over those deposits or retaining fees, and there is that feeling of excitement that you are one step closer to the wedding; but also a small twitchy feeling of anxiety. Have you just made the right decision? After all, it’s a big investment, isn’t it?

And that’s the key phrase. You have made ‘an investment’. An investment with a professional, an investment into their skill and expertise; and now you trust them to do an expert job for you.

Investment goes further than your pocket, however – or at least it should. It’s simple, really. Yes, those professionals you have booked will do their job… but wouldn’t it be great if they did more than just that? Go that extra mile, make that extra effort; invest themselves in your wedding day, in YOU; and give you that little something extra in return.

When our couples book with us, we always intend to do just that. We want to get to know our couples, form a relationship so that we can get the very best from them, and give the very best we can in return. It’s lovely, too, to be able to say after the event that the couple have become more than just a client, they have become a friend, hopefully a friend we will see again over the years, just to say hello from time to time, catch up on the new babies and exchange the odd Christmas card.

But let’s turn this on its head for a minute. What if there is no relationship? What if you simply book your professional to do the job… and that’s that? No personal contact, you just pay final fees, check Wedding Day details and expect them to turn up and do what you have paid them to do. Well that should be ok; you have taken your time to choose and hire professionals, and as such they should perform accordingly.

But because you haven’t made an investment in them, taken the trouble to get to know them a little – why should they in return invest in you, get to know you and your personal desires for this special day you re planning? After all they are just the hired help, aren’t they?

If you want to get the very best from your suppliers (and after all your research, you paid good money for the best you could find, yes? So why wouldn’t you want the best they can give you) then simply invest in them. Just a little. Take an interest in what they do; read their blog, catch up on facebook from time to time. Above all discuss your plans, your dreams – make them feel part of your big day, not just someone who is performing a functional service.

You will be surprised at just how much more fun they are to be around, what an incredible store of knowledge they have for you to draw on, and how often you notice them doing just that little bit more than you expected.

Oh, and above all – don’t forget to say a quick thank you when the dust has settled and you have time to reflect. And if they don’t deserve a thank you? Well, be sure to tell them that too!

If your a client of ours or even if you aren’t, come and chat to us on

or even on ….

We would be very pleased to see you there :-)

Combe House Gittisham Devon Wedding of Lisa & Ben

You can now view Lisa & Ben’s Combe House Wedding Album over on the Main Wedding Photography site if you click here!

Last Sunday I went back to the fabulous Combe House in Gittisham Devon for the wedding of Lisa and Ben. This time my happy couple got married in the lovely church of St Michaels actually in the village of Gittisham and their guests were transported two and fro from Combe House to the church in a lovely vintage double decker bus.

The weather could have been kinder during the day, we had some very heavy blustery showers, however this didn’t stop us getting outside for the few formals and some romantic shots of Lisa and Ben in the Gardens of Combe. Later however just as everyone was entering the Marquee (which was fabulously dressed from Lisa’s inspiration as you will see in some of the pictures below) for the wedding breakfast, the skies finally cleared and we were left with beautiful late summer sunshine, which turned into a fabulous sunset and a clear starry night.

A wonderful relaxing day full of laughter and fun ended with dancing in the great hall.

Congratulations Lisa and Ben I wish you all the happiness for the future.

The Vyne Basingstoke Hampshire eshoot of Lisa & Ben

Yesterday I took a little trip to Basingstoke in Hampshire to meet up with Lisa and Ben for their eshoot. We met at the fabulous Vyne now owned by the National Trust but formally a Tudor home built for Lord Sandys Henry V111′s Lord Chamberlain. It was a beautiful sunny summers day and we took our time wandering around the fabulous gardens catching up on the details of their wedding which is coming up very soon at the wonderful Combe House in Devon. Oh and we got some lovely pictures too!

Here are a few images from Lisa and Ben’s eshoot…

Wells Somerset Wedding of Sarah & Andrew

A beautiful sunny early summer’s day, and I’m off to Wells in Somerset to cover the wedding of Sarah and Andrew.

A little back story here: You may remember Sarah from the pictures on here and say I have seen her before somewhere! Well you have, and that’s not just because of her eshoot, but because Sarah with her Mum Sue, runs Enzo’s the hair and beauty Salon and is of course one of the professional weeding suppliers I have the pleasure of recommending (see their recent article on here)!  So of course when I was asked to actually cover Sarah’s wedding, I was absolutely delighted, and today’s the day its actually here at last…

I arrive in Wells and head to the White Hart Hotel, the main venue for today’s wedding. I head upstairs to find Sarah, Mum, nan, well pretty much everybody bustling with the usual morning preparations. I spend some time with the girls and capture the usual details and getting ready shots and then eventually head back downstairs to find Andrew the Groom already looking very smart in his suit.

Soon the registrars are on site and its time for the usual interviews. I head into the ceremony room and am soon joined by Andrew and all of their guests and family, all we need now is the beautiful Bride. And we are not disappointed for very soon, Sarah on the arm of her proud father is soon gliding down the aisle to her waiting groom. A touching ceremony, a lovely poem specially written for the occasion and soon the words, ‘I now pronounce you Man and Wife’ and Sarah and Andrew are Mr and Mrs Ford at last. Official legal documents to be signed and then we are off, out into the beautiful sunshine and across the road into the lovely grounds which also encompass the magnificent wells Cathedral.

Champagne all round then, relaxing conversation, laughter and fun, a beautiful backdrop and beautiful warm sunny day….perfect! Time for a few family formal photographs and then Sarah, Andrew and I slip away to give them some time alone away from the madding crowd, a time for them to catch their breath and spend a little bit of personal time together – my job, to work round them and capture some romantic images for their album.

Soon, its time to head back to their venue and time for the celebration which is the wedding breakfast. I have been invited to dine at one of the tables, which is very nice indeed, I know the food will be lovely but I’m looking forward to the wedding cake (more later!).

A lovely meal, time for the speeches funny and touching and some great football analogy from Dad! Now it’s time to cut that beautiful wedding cake, Ive been looking forward to this all day :-) Sarah and Andrew, like me don’t do heavy fruit cake, it’s just not our thing. So when Sarah told me she was having a ginormous three tiered sponge cake filled with raspberries and fresh cream no less!!!  I have to say I was almost as excited about the cake as I was about the rest of the day ;-) So cake cutting formalities done, its coffee and…well, cake time naturally! GOOD, and I mean REALLY GOOD – you can tell I like sponge cake can’ t you, well this one certainly lived up to its billing.

Well stuffed with lovely food and cake, I must get back into the swing and ready for the evening ahead. We have a little time now whilst the room is readied for the next round of festivities, so Sarah, Andrew and I head back out into the lovely evening sunshine and make the most of the beautiful surroundings to capture a few more special images for their album.

Back inside now and evening guests are arriving in number and soon the venue is bursting at the seams, laughter and good cheer to be had all round. The DJ comes to the mike and Sarah and Andrew are called to the dance floor amid large applause. A quiet hush, the music begins and Sarah and Andrew take their first dance steps as man and wife. Soon joined by other couples and then time for the music to step up a pace. Almost my time to leave, one  drink with Sarah and Andrew before I do though and then it’s goodbye. Another very lovely day, a very lovely couple, oh yes…and a very lovely cake too ;-)

Here are a few of my favourite images from the day…
