Planning Your Wedding – Insider info from Impact Disco

Continuing our series of top tips and articles from wedding suppliers, today I have the pleasure in introducing you to James Murphy from Impact Disco. James is a great DJ who will really get your party jumping, I would also recommend you sign up to his pod-casts they are also really entertaining. Here’s James:

Hi my name’s James Murphy, and I run Impact Disco Entertainment, based in Weymouth, Dorset. Although I have had the pleasure of working alongside Courtenay at many a wedding, one in particular stands out – last summer on one of the wettest days of the year, and yet even though it was a marquee reception, it was a great wedding, and one that everyone enjoyed.

(James doing his thing for Chloe & Ben’s first dance from last years wettest wedding!)

Now it’s your turn to have a function and so you’re looking for a Disco and a DJ for your entertainment. It’s not something you do on a regular basis and you’re not sure what you should be looking for, after all, discos are all the same aren’t they?

Choosing a DJ for your function is one of the most important decisions you can make to ensure the success of the event. Everything else can be perfect, but if the music isn’t good, the party will fizzle. Selecting the right Disco for your party can be confusing. There are over 15,000 DJs in the U.K. all promising they’ll do a great job for you. So how do you pick the right one for you? Hopefully, I’ll be able to provide you with some guidance to help you make the decision easier.

The best and easiest way is to find a DJ you’ll like is to hire one you’ve already seen. If you’ve been at a wedding or party where the DJ was great, find out who he or she was. If you didn’t get their card, ask the host or the manager of the function room where the party was held.

If you haven’t seen a good DJ recently, ask your friends. Your friends probably have the same taste in music as you. Maybe they’ve been to a function you missed. Let them know ahead of time you’ll be looking, and ask them to keep their eyes and ears open.

If the first two suggestions don’t work, your job gets tougher. You might have to go to the Yellow Pages. Look under Disc Jockeys, Mobile Discos, Music and Entertainment. Circle the ads in which the DJ mention the type of party you’re planning. For example, if you’re planning a wedding, a DJ whose ad says ‘We specialise in Weddings’ would be a good one to call. You’ll probably find several DJs whose ads look good. Alternatively, you can search the internet. There are many good directories to check such as the Wedding DJ Association www.weddingdja.co.uk which will even help you find DJs and Discos in your area.

How do you tell which one is best? Probably the worst way to choose a DJ is on price alone. Some DJs are more expensive than others. Prices can range from £120 to £800+ for a 4 hour event. That’s quite a difference, and it would be very tempting to choose the cheapest alternative. If that’s all you can afford, then you have no choice. But, consider the law of supply and demand. There is a reason that some DJs charge more than others. They are usually worth it. More expensive DJs tend to be the more experienced DJs. They can charge more because they have a lot of jobs, and they have a good reputation. Generally, the DJs on the low end of the price scale are new to the business, and trying to get established. They could do a good job, and might be worth a shot if your party is on the informal side. But there is probably more at risk with a less experienced person.

As you speak with the DJs, pay attention to their professionalism over the phone. It tends to spill over into their DJ style. The most important thing to ask is their experience with your type of event. If you are planning an event like a wedding, it would be normal to expect a professional DJ to have performed for at least 25 of these events. A number in the hundreds is actually common for a DJ who is well established.

DJs with less experience might also do a good job. And they’ll usually cost less. If you talk to one who sounds interesting, ask them for references. Get 4 or 5 names and phone numbers of people who have recently hired them. Call these references and ask about the DJs performance. Any DJ can easily give you 2 or 3 names. Getting more names is a better test of the quality of their performance.

You might also ask the DJ if they are performing in a location where you could see them. If so, make a visit, unannounced. Observe how the DJ interacts with the crowd. Are people having fun? Are people dancing? Is the music too loud? Is the DJ dressed appropriately? These are all good clues to the DJs skills and personality.

Always ask the DJ about their policy on requests. The best DJs will take requests from the audience and work them into their routine. However, do not expect the DJ to play every request. Many requests are simply inappropriate for the mood of the event. A good DJ is not a jukebox. He will blend requests with songs he feels will properly motivate the crowd. The art of DJing is timing, and this takes experience. Forcing a DJ to ignore his or her instincts by making them play every request will result in an ‘uneven’ (and less fun party). On the other hand, the DJ should try to play as many of your audience’s requests as possible. Try to get a feel for their philosophy of requests as you interview them. It is also appropriate to give a DJ a list of 5 or 6 songs you ‘must have’. Just don’t make that list 15 or 20 songs long.

Many DJs boast about the number of songs they have. While variety is great, the fact is that they will only be able to play 60-70 songs in a four hour shoe. Having the right 60 songs is a lot more important than having 20,000 songs your crowd doesn’t want to hear. After you tell the DJ what type of party you are having and who the audience will be, ask him what type of music they’d suggest. You should feel comfortable with most of his or her selections.

Many DJs also boast about having great equipment. Unless you are familiar with professional audio gear, you probably won’t know which brands are great and which are budget. However, your DJ should at least have professional grade equipment. If they list brand names you are familiar with at the local electronics retailer, that is a cause for further questioning. Home stereo equipment is not designed to stand up to 4-5 hours of high volume use. It could fail in the middle of your party! For example, typical professional DJ power amplifiers usually have 200-600 watts per channel, where consumer amplifiers that are considered powerful may have only 100 watts per channel.

Some DJ companies have more than one DJ working for them. In this case, it’s important to get references on the particular DJ who will be assigned to your show. Even if the company has been around for ten years, they might have hired your DJ last week. He might be a pro himself, or he may be newly trained. Be sure of who you’re getting.

The perfect DJ for you will be affordable, experienced at your type of event, and have great references. There are probably a lot of DJs who fit that description. As you search remember that above all, you want your event to be fun. Also remember, you need to feel comfortable with your DJ.

I hope this helps you, as you look for your entertainment.

Real Bride Top Tips #5

These tips are just in from Lyndsey & Jeegar who got married at Audley’s Wood Hotel in Basingstoke. The day was a real cosmopolitan affair with guests from not only all around Europe but a very large contingent from America and India.

Hi Courtenay

Our favourite picture is this one where you can see us walking up to the marquee for dinner.

What I love about this is that we’re having a private moment but you can see people in the background enjoying themselves, and it’s all framed by the wonderful elegant house.

My top three tips are:

1) remember that your friends are there to celebrate with you; not to judge you – they won’t notice or care if the bridesmaids flowers don’t exactly match the shade of the dress; so keep things in perspective and don’t obsess in advance about things you won’t even care about on the day!

2) on a similar theme, despite what the wedding magazines might make you believe, this is not a competition to see how much money you can spend! So only invest in things that are really important to you. We saved by not having transport or favours, but also by making our own orders of service – and actually people liked them because they were more personal.

3) On the day, don’t let anyone ask you or your partner any questions about organisation or logisitics – throw your mobile phone away and send everyone in the direction of your best man or chief bridesmaid. It’s the most special and amazing day of your life – don’t waste a second trying to find anyone’s button hole!

Oh, and I would also recommend making sure that you have done up your dress properly after going to the loo. Both my sister and I failed to do this at our weddings….must be a family trait!

Hope you’re doing well

Best wishes

Lyndsey & Jeegar

Real Bride Top Tips

In the quieter period just after Christmas, we have decided to have a bit of fun and look back over the previous year (2008) with a little help from our lovely Brides.

I have asked them to pick out there favourite picture from their wedding and tell me why.

Whilst doing this I have also asked them to provide me with three top tips from their experience of planning a wedding for this years Brides.

These will all be published on our Blog for you to read, starting with the first one to arrive from Rhian and Mark.

They got married in July last year and it was one of the better days weather wise the sun shone all day! They had a church ceremony in Evershot followed by a Marquee reception back at Rhian’s family home.

This is what Rhian had to say:

Hi Courtenay,

Our favourite photo is

the reason we love it is because it is so natural and not many people capture Mark’s cheeky smile, nice one Courtenay! We have it in a large frame in our lounge so we can always see it.

Here are my tips (Rhian) as Mark’s would probably just be “buy loads of Peroni, invest in a laser show and have a 2 day party!”.

Tip 1: Don’t panic about the day itself: Go and get a pedicure, manicure and beauty treatment the day before to relax you. If that fails…rescue remedy and a glass or two of bubbly in the morning will do the trick!
Tip 2: Dress each bridesmaid in a style that suits them but using the same fabric. That way they are more likely to be comfortable for the day and they don’t look like clones! They will love you for it.
Tip 3: Invest in a good photographer, who will be there for the whole event, capture every moment but not take over your day. It is money well spent as you get to keep the end products for the rest of you lives…invaluable. (and no I didn’t pay Rhian to say this…!)

Cerne Abbas Dorset Wedding of Chloe & Ben

Chloe and Ben are a really lovely couple and I was really looking forward to shooting their special day. The day itself was to be a very local family affair, a real Dorset country wedding. Marrying at the beautiful St Mary’s Church in Cerne Abbas then back to Chloe’s family home just half a mile down the road where a marquee would be waiting in the beautiful gardens. Chloe’s Mum I know had been working especially hard in organising the event and had put an enormous amount of work in to making everything look just right, every tiny detail was just perfect all it needed now was a perfect English Summer day and the scene would be set.

The day itself finally arrived and …… so did the rain! Now when I say rain perhaps I am understating this. A strong gusty wind was also present and the rain came down and horizontally and from below, I kid you not. In fact it was probably one of the worst days this summer has seen so far, unbelievable – what timing, what an utter shame.

Still to the house I went and a very upbeat family I found there, who were simply adjusting their plans to work round the weather; a receiving line through the dining room yes, drinks in the house, an umbrella conveyor service to ferry guests to the marquee, again all changed plans meticulously slid into place and we were set.

After capturing events at the house I proceeded to go down to the Church and set the scene and then catch up with Ben and the boys at the New Inn for a few impromptu shots – and still the rain came down.
Back to the house – I had the privilege to be asked to travel to the church in the wedding car with Chloe and her father (which was good fun too as it was rather a tight squeeze for the chauffeur and I between the umbrellas and my camera paraphernalia). At the Church I dived out into the rain to capture Chloe’s big entrance, I have to say she looked absolutely stunning.

The ceremony was lovely and at last Chloe and Ben appeared triumphant as man and wife at the Church doors to be greeted by me (of course) and yes you guessed it – the rain. It had been decided by Ben and Chloe that they would like to go for a little drive round the local countryside to have some private time and capture a few romantic country photographs (still pouring). I thought at this point, surely thats just not going to happen, but with the couple still laughing off we went to do just that! We stopped in several locations, and on a sunny day I have to say they would have been truly stunning – however now they were really dramatic! I have to say that Chloe and Ben were real stars because out into the rain they got, nothing but nothing was going to stop them from enjoying their day and getting the pictures the desired for their album – I was soaked but hey… all in the name of art!! :-)

Finally we returned to the house, where we found a very warm welcome indeed. Champagne flowed and the house was filled with laughter, no one paid any attention to the rain outside. I managed to stage a few family formals in the conservatory and capture the general atmosphere in the house – then the receiving line and the conveyor to the marquee. The beautifully decorated marquee stood up well to the raging weather outside and the atmosphere inside was warm hearted, full of laughter and love. A wonderful meal ensued (with Chloe’s multiple choices of puddings being my absolute favourite idea of the day – in fact I’m thinking of asking all my future brides to consider this – if you cant choose one, have them all ;-) ) and then the touching and funny speeches.
About half past seven I stuck my head out of the marquee – no rain!!!! NO RAIN!!! Quick, the large group shot that I hadn’t been able to achieve earlier that was on my couples requested list. Everyone exited the marquee and in no time the shot was done, I even managed to capture a few extra shots of the couple and the parents before yes you guessed it it started to rain again.
Back in to the marquee and the first dance and the evening had begun in style. At last sadly it was my time to leave, a fond farewell to Chloe, Ben and their family and I was out into the dark (and yes very wet night). What a day.
To Chloe and Ben, I know the day weather wise was not ideal but your fun love and laughter dried up all the rain and yes you did have that perfect Dorset country summer wedding. Congratulations to you both, I wish you a long an happy life together.

Audleys Wood Hampshire Wedding of Lyndsey & Jeegar

Lyndsey and Jeegar got married at Audleys Wood Hotel a fine former Victorian Hunting lodge hidden in 7 acres of Hampshire countryside. Again it looked like the British summer was going to disappoint us as the morning slowly turned from just being slightly overcast to a dreary damp drizzle. Still the weather would not dampen the spirits and the days festivities began in earnest.
Up to the girls first, a room filled with laughter and I have to say complete calmness, the usual comings and goings – hair and makeup and the beautiful dresses, bridesmaids, flowergirls, and Mums and Dads. Soon Lyndsey was looking stunning in her dress and ready to marry her man.
The boys it has to be said left things a little later than perhaps they should have to get ready, but with typical blokey style they pulled it off with some panache and time to spare to allow the all important drink in the bar before the ceremony.
The ceremony itself was a touching affair and at last Lyndsey and Jeegar could finally call themselves husband and wife. Outside the party processed to play some garden games – giant Jenga, Boules and the like, still drizzling slightly a few umbrella’s put pay to that and the happy couple and their guests enjoyed champagne, canapes the games and good warm company of friendship.
Then to the marquee for the wedding breakfast – once everyone was seated safely inside and enjoying their meal, the sky cleared and the sun came out! Typical – still after the meal and hilarious speeches at least this allowed the guests to mingle outside in the warm evening sunshine, whilst Lyndsey Jeegar and I were able to slip off for a few quiet romantic shots.
Back to the marquee, welcoming more guests for the evening fun and then the first dance. The party then really kicked up a gear and everyone partied the night away. Lyndsey and Jeegar are a very lovely warm and genuine couple, I wish them every happiness.

Cranford Hall Northamptonshire Wedding of Jessica & James

Jessica and James married in the lovely St Johns church in the picturesque village of Cranford in Northamptonshire their home village. The morning didn’t start too well however as the English summer weather just wasn’t playing ball, as the rain started to fall quite persistently. Jessica readied at home with her bridesmaids and as she finally made her way to the Church in an open toped Bentley the heavens really opened -typical. However as Jessica reached the Church the rain suddenly stopped as if a tap had been turned off and the sun came out at exactly the moment Jessica paraded down the Church path toward the open door and her husband to be! Divine moment perhaps!! James had been patiently waiting inside for Jessica and soon the vows were exchanged, helped along I have to say by a wonderful if not slightly eccentric vicar (perhaps a tale for another time!) and from the Church doors the happy couple appeared triumphant.
On to Cranford Manor for the reception which was to be held in a Marquee in the truly beautiful grounds. The sun shone for the rest of the day and everyone soaked up the beautiful atmosphere summer sun and quite a few glasses of champagne. At last it was time for everyone to take their places in the marquee for the wedding breakfast and speeches to follow. Cake cutting time and then a little more time to relax and enjoy some summer evening sun and welcome more guests arriving for the evening party – this also allowed me some time to capture some really cute pictures of some of the younger guests playing in the beautiful evening sunshine. Then the call from the DJ, the first dance about to begin, everyone gathered about and James and Jessica took to floor for their first dance together as husband and wife.
The whole days atmosphere was one of laughter, love and good friendship, it was a real pleasure to have been included in the celebrations. Thanks guys for your hospitality, I wish you all the very best for the future.

Evershot Dorset Wedding of Rhian & Mark

Rhian and Mark are a fabulous couple and it was a pleasure to capture their wedding for them. A beautiful sunny day, I headed to Greenfields in Holywell (Rhians family home), where she and her party were getting ready and also where the marquee had been erected in one of the paddocks ready for the reception. Preparations were a relatively calm and peaceful affair, the day had started perfectly. I wandered to and fro from the house to the marquee capturing all the details and general goings on whilst Rhians famous Dexter cows looked on, totally unfazed by the whole event. Rhian is training to be a vet, she is also (I was later to find out in the speeches) a Dexter Judge, so has a very strong connection to the countryside and a real English country wedding this was going to be.
Off to the Church, St Osmunds in Evershot, Mark and his band of merry men including Richard Branson his best man, all freshly revived from the pub and raring to go, a quick chat with the Rev John Rennie (a true gent and a scholar) and I was all set too.
Rhian arrived looking absolutely stunning; down the aisle to meet her husband to be. Rhian’s dog Bubbles played her part by bringing the rings down the aisle in a special bag at the appropriate time, Rhian called and Bubbles obeyed! A very novel idea and one which helped raise a few laughs and settled if there were any (although none on show) a few nerves.
Married and triumphant Rhian and Mark exited the Church into the warm summer sunshine, a few family group shots followed at the church and then we were off. Rhian and Mark and the immediate wedding party headed for a friends house, the Manor in Beaminster for some beautiful portrait shots and a little quiet time – I have to say that the back drop was simply stunning. The rest of the guests headed back to Greenfields for a champagne reception.
Soon Rhian and Mark and the wedding party joined the rest of their guests at Greenfields (oh yes I came along too), a wonderful meal followed and speeches full of laughter and love.
As the sun began to set on a truly wonderful day, more guests began to arrive for the evening festivities (and quite a few camping over I understand) The disco kicked in and the dancing began, what a fantastic day.

To Rhian and Mark and your family – thank you so much for your hospitality, I felt very welcome, it was a great day and I wish you all the happiness for the future. Looking forward to your trash the dress session already Rhian!

Don’t forget to leave your comments below for Rhian and Mark who I know will enjoy reading them.
