How to find YOUR wedding Photographer – Wedding Planning Guide 2011

Today see’s the culmination of our recent regular feature on the Wedding Planning Guide, and we thought why not finish with a little something from ourselves! Firstly though, I would just like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all the wonderful wedding suppliers who have taken part this year.

I hope you have all enjoyed this series, maybe learned something, picked up some useful tips and perhaps even found yourself a fab supplier for your wedding!

So, without further ado, last but not least…it’s me ;-)

How do you find a wedding photographer to trust with your wedding? Once you start looking, its all a bit bewildering– there are just so flipping many! But with a little preparation you will be far better equipped to judge what you are looking at – and it is so important that you invest that time at this stage, and don’t just wish you had done so later.

It’s easy to pick out the really bad, but differentiating the averagely good from the really good can sometimes be harder at first glance. There is a lot of difference between someone who knows how to use a camera and can take some great shots, and an experienced professional who can deliver a beautiful wedding. The trick, of course, is to spot one from the other…

So instead of being wowed by pretty websites try considering separating up the parts and marking them on four criteria:

The StyleThe PersonThe ExperienceThe Product.

?    The Style
Just start looking at websites. What kind of photography speaks to you, and makes you say ‘THAT’S what I want”?
Be sure to look closely – are you sure that the beautifully posed images you’re looking at are from real weddings? How much of your wedding day will be absorbed by the photographer to create them? Do you prefer a relaxed photojournalistic style where very few people know the camera is there?
Above all else, make sure your chosen photographer produces images that make you feel something.

?    The Person
Weddings are demanding and stressful and Hard Work. The only way to do it successfully is to be truly passionate about what you are doing. It takes a special kind of person to photograph 40+ weddings a year, and remain creative and excited about their job; to not only tenderly capture the most intimate of gazes as vows are made, but to organise 150 people for a group shot and keep everyone laughing; never forgetting there’s Only One Chance to get it right.

Professional photographers take their business and their profession seriously – this is no ‘hobby money’ for them. They charge a fee based fairly on their overheads, experience and expertise.

They will be with you a LOT of the day – make sure you actually, you know, LIKE them. Do they make you laugh? Will you be comfortable having them with you during quiet personal moments? If they make you grit your teeth? Leave. now.

?    The Experience
Quite simply, it takes experience to understand and anticipate the Wedding Day. But it also takes experience to understand and anticipate the needs of the couple before and after the day too – good old-fashioned Service.
Employ a novice building their portfolio, or a part-timer who has a ‘real life’ job with other commitments, by all means – but make sure you do so knowingly, and pay accordingly.
A professional photographer is the only wedding supplier to work the whole wedding day, from before you slip your dress on all the way through to the dancing shoes. A good wedding photographer will have attended potentially 100’s of weddings, and is something of a wedding expert by default – and will gladly share the vast amount of ‘insider’ knowledge they have gleaned along the way. That alone can be worth a fortune.
They understand the investment they need to make in each wedding, the amount of time they need to put into planning, in meeting you, in visiting the venue, talking to the celebrant… Turning up an hour before the ceremony with your order of service clutched in their hand, and just following you around from there doesn’t really cut it.

?    The Product
What you ‘get’ should actually be your last decision criteria. If the first three aren’t right, no amount of goodies in section four will make your wedding photography better.
Ultimately, the photography has to be at the heart of your decision. You have ONE CHANCE to get the images to put in your Wedding Album that will be looked at for generations to come. Get those images right, and all will be well. Get them wrong, and no amount of photo shopping & special effects, nor parent albums, DVD’s, Guest books and personalised calendars will correct them for you.
If the photography is great, the album can wait a year.

Think about these points as you interview your photographers, and you should be well on the way to choosing the right Wedding Photographer for you…

1 – Does their style of imagery ‘sing’ to you? Is it creating a unique story for each wedding, rather than a formula with different people in the same shots? Is it making you shout that this is the way you want YOUR wedding photographs to be?
2 – Do you immediately warm to the photographer? Is he passionate about what he does? Above all – do you trust him? Do you totally believe he can handle whatever your day brings him, with a smile on his face and a calm, relaxed manner?
3 – Is the business a professional one? Does the photographer run an established practice, does he provide clear contracts, detailing the obligations and undertakings of both parties?
4 – If you remove all the peripheral ‘product’ from your package, would you still be happy just with the photography you expect to receive?

Thanks for reading, I hope you found this useful. Of course if you are interested in talking to me about covering your wedding, please do take a good look over this blog, visit my website (details below) and give me a call (or drop me an email), I will be very happy to hear from you.

Best wishes

Fiddleford Manor Dorset Eshoot with Sarah & Jon

What a lovely day and just perfect for a meandering wander through the water meadows near Fiddleford Manor in Dorset with Sarah and Jon for their Eshoot. Sarah and Jon were a bit nervous at first, both of them not keen on having their pictures taken, still soon we were all laughing and having a great time, and the camera clicking away was all but forgotten. Sarah and Jon are getting married in the lovely little church All Saints in Durrington and then going on to Shrewton Manor near Stone Henge for their reception, I hope the weather is as good as it has been today.

Plan Your Wedding: Insider Info – What’s Hot for 2010 by Lisa Notley Wedding Cakes

Today’s Article come from the Lovely Lisa Notley of Lisa Notley Wedding cakes – oh and they are scrummy too (the cakes that is…. ahem, not that Lisa’s not!  well you know what I mean, I’ll shut up now before I dig myself in deeper – suffice to say, if you are looking for a fab scrummy wedding cake, then it’s Lisa you should be talking to!).

Here is Lisa:

Ohhh… it’s that time of year again when Courtenay comes along asking for a piece for his blog, or perhaps he’s just after one of my chocolate cakes……..   (As if I would Lisa ;-) )

We have had a really exciting start to the year here, at Lisa Notley Wedding Cakes. We were asked to take some mini individual chocolate – wrapped cakes up to London for a photo shoot for Conde Naste Brides magazine. The cakes look amazing within the “HOT HUES” story. You can see the cakes & story in the Jan/ Feb 2010 issue of the magazine. We also have a tiered chocolate shard cake going in the May/ June issue. We get such a buzz seeing our cakes in the best selling bridal magazine. It’s also very good for business!!

Trends that we are seeing for this year’s wedding cakes are tall deep narrow tiers, which will give great impact to any reception. Bright colours – think juicy oranges & fuchsia pinks, white cakes with piped pearls, oversized sugar flowers & sparkles. Extravagantly bold chocolate decorated wedding cakes are still a huge hit as are our mini chocolate cakes which can be used as dessert. Brides are becoming more adventurous with their cake designs & are choosing some deliciously different cake bases – including our scrumptious dark chocolate and whiskey cake, champagne & strawberry cake & lemon with Limón cello liqueur cake.

(One of Lisa’s fabulous creations from the wedding of Rhian & Mark)

I always finish on a recipe (though never one of our top secret wedding cake recipes!)
This is our family favourite at the moment…..it’s so easy to make & great as a “cake” or served as pudding with ice-cream & berries.

Chocolate & marshmallow fridge cake.

300 grams of dark chocolate drops, use good quality 53% cocoa solids or above.
180 grams butter.
225grams digestive biscuits, broken into small pieces.
200grams of mini marshmallows
150 grams dried fruit, cherries or / & nuts.
50 grams melted white chocolate

Line a baking sheet with baking parchment.

Melt butter in a saucepan; take the butter of the heat. Add the small pieces of chocolate. Leave for a minute & stir.

Add biscuits, 150 grams of the marshmallows& fruit / nuts & stir until all ingredients are coated in chocolate. Tip onto baking sheet & press down.

Sprinkle with the remaining marshmallows & drizzle with the white chocolate.

Pop in the fridge & leave until set. Remove from sheet & parchment, cut into pieces & store in an airtight container.

You can contact Lisa either by giving her a call on 01300 345139 or by visiting her website www.cakesbylisanotley.co.uk

I don’t know about you, but I’m salivating already just having read that recipe, where’s the phone….!

Rhinefield House Hampshire Wedding of Sam and Darren

You can now view Sam & Darren’s Rhinefield House Wedding Album over on the main Wedding Photography site if you click here!

A beautiful sunny spring day and I’m off to Rhinefield House in the New Forest for the wedding of Sam and Darren. I have been looking forward to this wedding for some time, Sam and Darren are so much fun and I know that their day is going to be a reflection of their personalities – a big plus is that Sam also loves the camera!

On arrival I head straight up to the honeymoon suite to find Sam, her Bridesmaid Hayley, and Sam’s Mum already getting into the early preparations. The mood is light and all is very calm indeed, so I cover the usual details and the all important getting ready shots, and I have plenty of time to head downstairs to photograph the beautiful setting for the ceremony and to pop into Darren’s room to get a few cheeky shots of the boys getting ready too. Its back upstairs and time for Sam to slip into her most beautiful gown; last minute hair and lippy checks and time to away downstairs to make her grand entrance – what a stunning picture she makes too.

I head into the Great Hall to find a very smart but nervous looking Darren waiting for his lovely Bride, and soon the wait is over as the music begins to play and Sam enters the room, gliding gracefully down the aisle on the arm of her stepfather Earle towards her waiting man. The ceremony is fairly short but a very romantic affair, official registers signed and soon Sam and Darren exit the Grand Hall triumphantly, Mr and Mrs Morgan at last.

Out into the beautiful gardens and the warm sunshine – drinks and canapes on the terrace, and a very relaxed atmosphere indeed. After some mingling it’s time for the few traditional family formal pictures to be taken, and then Sam, Darren and I slip away for a short while to capture those more intimate photographs for their album.

All too soon it’s time for everyone to retreat back inside to take their places for the wedding breakfast. Speeches first, which I always think is a great idea – especially if you are not a keen public speaker, as it means once you have said your piece you can really relax and enjoy yourself. The speeches themselves ranged from the very touching to the hilarious, especially the wonderful pictorial history of Darren’s formative years – I’m sure he will be thanking his best men for a long time to come! After the speeches came the wonderful meal and then time for another wedding tradition, the cutting of the wedding cake.

Evening guests were now arriving, and everyone moved into the next room where the DJ had already set up, ready to start the evening festivities. Soon everyone was invited to form a large square round the dance floor, the large doors at the end of the room were flung open wide and Mr and Mrs Morgan make their last dramatic entrance of the day onto the dance floor for their first official dance as husband and wife. The evening continued with merriment, a video booth for those fun and quirky messages for the happy couple and the evening buffet was an excellent serving of chips in cones and fab bacon butties (Mmmm…). Sadly, at last it’s my time to bid farewell.

Did the day live up to my expectations? No – it surpassed them.

Congratulations Sam and Darren, I wish you all the happiness for the future. X

We are forever thinking of new ways to incorporate escort cards into a clients wedding. Whether hanging from trees, blossom branches within varies types of vases or urns. With different colour cards and ribbon.

We love to place table plans in individual vintage picture Frames – a real mix match to create a vintage feel to a reception.

Paul Antonio, the famous calligrapher is now printing bespoke invitations – which are to die for!

Hire large Vintage Mirrors and have a calligrapher write your wedding menu on them in white paint.

Involve your guests – ask them to send in a DJ request with their RSVP card

Ask your makeup artist to stay behind until the evening dancing with an assistant or two to offer “Makeup Touch up Bars” – ensuring your female guests look their best all day long.
