Plan Your Wedding: Insider Info – What’s Hot for 2010 by Fiona of Combe House Devon

Well, we thought we had finished our run of “What’s Hot” articles from our favourite suppliers for this year, and then we had a late submission from one of our favourite venue’s to shoot a wedding at! The very Fab and Chic Combe House Hotel in Gittisham Devon – How could we say no? Well of course we couldn’t, so I am very pleased to introduce you to the very lovely Fiona…

WHAT’S HOT AT COMBE HOUSE DEVON FOR WEDDINGS ?

Welcome to “Somewhere Different, Somewhere Special” – that’s Combe House Devon, a diamond amongst country houses in the quintessentially English thatched village of Gittisham.  When you get here and discover its serene peace and tranquility in the gorgeous Devon countryside, you could be a million miles from anywhere and yet it’s really close to key travel networks and ideally placed if you’re looking for a central location to gather guests from all points South, West, East and further North too!

(The Fabulous Combe House Hotel set in the beautiful Devon countryside – an idyllic Wedding Venue)

So what’s hot for wedding venues this year?

•    At Combe we’re finding that people are definitely seeking something different from the norm.  Individuality and  Quirkiness , the ability to express themselves and style their celebration are featuring prominently so our three-room dining option is going down a storm.   No more table plan worries, a solution to those awkward family situations and you get to move around three rooms with different groups of people rather than being obliged to spend the whole meal in one place!   Don’t worry about triple speech-making – everyone can be together in the Great Hall for this.

(Speeches in the Great Hall at Combe Housewedding of Francesca & Tatton)

•    And as a smaller, intimate setting the Georgian Kitchen  is definitely a unique option.

•    The emphasis is on Privacy and Comfort – a venue where couples feel their guests will be totally at home and can do their own thing without fear of disdainful looks from sometimes over-protective and quite frankly, rather annoying staff.  You won’t find that at Combe, we’re all on hand to provide support and care wherever needed, in a professional, friendly yet discreet manner but we also know where to draw the line.  It’s something some venues don’t quite get!

(Peace & Tranquility at Combe House a perfect place for romance – Wedding of Tatton & Francesca)

•    Next up – Winter Weddings  are becoming more popular, let’s face it, the dream of a summer wedding is little more than a myth since lazy summer days have become increasingly elusive.  So why not be proactive and choose a wintry option with roaring fires, candlelight and cosy English charm – Combe has this in abundance.  Cold is the new Hot!  Your guests will have something to look forward to in the bleaker months and you won’t be clashing dates with bridal contemporaries or the social calendar.  Plus you’ll have the added advantage of low season costs.

(Getting ready for a Wedding Ceremony in the Great Hall at Combe HouseWedding of Francesca & Tatton)

•    Then back to basics, Less is More.  Keep it simple, take the stress out of the equation and forget all the paraphernalia of favours and chair covers, fireworks and carriages.  Instead, choose a venue like Combe where the classic interior, stunning views, warmth and character speak for itself.  After all, what’s it all about – focus on the real meaning of your celebration and let the venue do the rest.

Weddings here are a lot of fun.  They’ll attract discerning couples who appreciate sophistication in an understated kind of way and who are searching for something a little bit unusual and quirky (so Courtenay fits in like a dream!).  This Elizabethan Manor House has an irresistible blend of original elegance and more contemporary twists on the historical themes.  It’s not too vacuous and not too bijou and if you take exclusivity you’ll really feel as if you’ve lived here for years – in fact it’s quite upsetting on Sunday morning when strangers start to return to “your” house!  The Linen Suite, beautiful Thatched Cottage or Tommy Wax Signature room with views over the 3500 acre estate present a dilemma in selecting your bridal suite – too much choice!  How would you like to be gently woken in the morning with the sound of country life and Combe’s pheasants?  Are you a horse lover because you’ll be able to see the thoroughbred Arabian horses gambolling on the nearby hillside and if you’re feline-friendly then you can have Maverick, the cream Burmese house cat, purring contentedly on your lap as you chat to your friends and family – but watch out for your peanuts!  Or, if you can’t imagine your wedding day without including your best friend, that’s the four-legged variety, dogs are welcome – we’ve even had one act as ring bearer!

(Drinks reception – Champagne & Canapes in the Great Hall Combe HouseWedding of Francesca & Tatton)

A wedding for two – we’re happy with that.  A wedding for 150 with an Indian theme in a giant Teepee and cascades of orchids and gerberas – Viki & Rana, that was one we won’t forget!  Marcelle & Nick, a beautiful, elegant, Christmas Wedding.  Jacqueline & Myles – paella, partying and plenty of staying power!  Tatton & Francesca – vintage buses and vegetarian feasts (their Wedding Story by Courtenay is available to see as a reminder of their very special weekend).   We love to make your wedding your own, it’s how it should be, creating a celebration unique to the two of you.

(Francesca & Tatton’s fantastic vintage Bus at Combe House)

Our Wedding Co-ordinator, Fiona, is available Wednesday to Sunday, so viewing is never a problem.  Call her on 01404 540400 to arrange a visit and see why Combe is a dream location and hot contender for your special day.

Plan Your Wedding: Insider Info – What’s Hot for 2010 by Karen Evans of Karen Evans Designs

Continuing on our theme of ‘What’s Hot for 2010′ today I would like to introduce you to specialist wedding florist Karen Evans of Karen Evans Designs – all things wonderful in the world of wedding flowers!

Here is what Karen has to say…

What’s Hot for 2010?

Peach is making a comeback….Did I say that out loud. Yes I did, I said it, it’s out there. I’ve predicted this before and one year I will be right. Last fashionable as a wedding colour back in the 80’s and with everything 80’s in fashion again surely it’s time for peach to return. However it would of course be more sophisticated , mixed with orange and apricot or zingy lime green. Used against black or chocolate it would look stunning…in fact positively edible.

Talking of black…the black and white theme 4 weddings is still big news if you are looking for a glamorous and elegant feel for your big day. White flowers are classic and never date but equally you could use bright pink as a contrast. Lace & diamante details added to your flowers help to add interest and texture.

Finally the vintage style is very much in vogue. Vintage dresses, vintage rings, vintage china and vintage style flowers. When I say vintage I mean those lovely washed out , faded colours found in some varieties of roses like “Hypnose”, “Old Dutch”, “Metallina” and “Dolce Vita”. Stocks, Sweet Peas,  Hydrangeas and Peonies all work well. Decorate Birdcages , candelabra or vintage teacups and teapots with roses and daisies.

Plan Your Wedding: Insider Info – What’s Hot for 2010 by Jamie Wonnacott of Entwined Films

Hi everyone, hope I find you all well? Sorry it’s been a few days since my last post on here I have been caught up doing what I love the most, shooting weddings! More details to come on those right here very soon:

In the meantime though, I would like to carry on with our current season of articles from top wedding suppliers that we recommend.

Today’s article come’s from the fab Jamie Wonnacott, creative director and master camera man of Entwined Films. Now I don’t readily recommend videographers when it come’s to weddings, and whilst I have worked with many over the years, the usual problem I find is that they simply haven’t evolved (now don’t shout at me if you are a videographer who feels quite the opposite – I’m not saying you don’t exist, I simply haven’t come across you as yet!), but in the case of Jamie this is quite the opposite. Jamie is a fantastic camera man, his skills are finely honed, he is unobtrusive in style (which is very important, especially when working with a photographer in that style) and not only does he produce fabulous work he is a really great guy to have around too!

Anyway, enough of that, simply to say that if you are looking for a videographer to cover your wedding, I couldn’t recommend Jamie highly enough, here’s Jamie…

Entwined Films… Don’t let the memories fade…
Historically speaking wedding videos have been pretty naff to say the least.  The combination of poor camera quality and limited editing capability has resulted in what amounts to an amateur video filmed by Uncle Bob (no offense intended Bob!).
Well it has taken a while for things to change, but I’m pleased to say wedding films are now the HOT addition to any wedding.
Think about it for a second…  You have been lucky enough to find the person you love and wish to spend the rest of your life with… You spend anywhere up to 2 years planning your wedding… you research and make decisions upon a thousand different issues to ensure the day runs perfectly…  you look better on the day than possibly ever before… you experience an emotional and fun filled wedding day that exceeds your expectations… and then at about 12 O’clock that evening, as the night begins to draw to an end, you begin to wonder ‘where has the day gone’!
But all is not lost, having booked Courtenay to take your wedding photos you return from your honeymoon to relive the whole day through a series of simply stunning (and I really do mean STUNNING!) images.
As time moves on our lives become full of new experiences. Little by little our memories begin to fade and sadly the emotion of the wedding day becomes faint.
Fortunately, a contemporary wedding film by Entwined Films means it doesn’t have to be this way. You can relive your whole day again; captured by an artistic eye. You can see your whole day from another person’s perspective. You can listen again to your vows and speeches and see all those small details you may have missed. But most importantly you can relive the ‘emotion’ of your wedding day and remind yourself of why you did it all in the first place. For this reason alone I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to have their wedding filmed.
But don’t take my word for it because there are a series of short Highlights Films on the website to show you a flavour of my work:
www.entwinedfilms.com.
And if you would like to see some full wedding DVD’s then feel free to get in touch. And don’t worry, there’s no obligation to book. I love what I do and hopefully you will feel the same way.
You can contact Jamie on Freephone 0808 225 0008 or email Jamie@entwinedfilms.com

Plan Your Wedding: Insider Info – What’s Hot for 2010 by Sandra of Heartfelt Ceremonies

Hi everyone, I hope you had a great bank holiday weekend? I have certainly had a busy one, dashing up and down the country covering some lovely weddings! More to come on those on these pages very soon! In the meantime to continue our current theme of articles from professional wedding suppliers, today i would like to introduce you to Sandra Cook from Heartfelt Ceremonies. Sandra having been an officiant of the registrar for Dorset for many years, decided to set up her own company offering a diverse service giving couples the choice on how and where to hold their special ceremony. Anyway here is Sandra to tell you more…

If you could choose anywhere at all to say ‘I do’ where would it be?  Would you know the perfect place or do you need some suggestions?  Heartfelt Ceremonies gives you the freedom to make the choices that will create a completely unique celebration.  Guests will tell you that they have never been to a ceremony as meaningful and enjoyable, and friends will ask how they can hold a personal ceremony of their own. Follow this link to see a selection of comments http://www.heartfelt-ceremonies.co.uk/testimonials.html

(A Personal outdoor ceremony in the Gardens of Gordleton Mill from the wedding of Christine & Daniel last year)

Heartfelt Ceremonies was created in 2005 by Sandra Cook, with the desire to give customers what they ask for – a unique way to celebrate their wedding, renewal of vows, baby welcoming and adoption ceremonies.  She says Yes to all requests, that means you get to say where, when and how to make your vows and promises.  Latest trends have shown that clients love to involve as many guests as possible by asking them to take part in their ceremony, with performances such as dancing, singing, reading, making speeches and making jokes.  Many couples love to surprise their audience with unusual guests (moving statues dressed as angels moving around the trees in a midnight forest ceremony), or ask their guests to contribute secretly (several guests standing up during the ceremony to offer their ‘worldly advice’ to the newly weds by using well known or funny quotes). Follow this link to see some excellent examples http://www.heartfelt-ceremonies.co.uk/giggles.html

(Sandra Cook, Proprietor of Heartfelt Ceremonies)

The most interesting trend is that my customers are not afraid to break from tradition and to use their celebration as a way to show their guests their true feelings by being able to express their own characters.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes

Sandra

Plan Your Wedding: Insider Info – What’s Hot for 2010 by Maunsel House Somerset

Hello everyone, hope you are all well and enjoying the latest round of articles from specialist wedding suppliers? Today’s piece comes from the lovely people at one of my favourite locations for a wedding, Maunsel House in Somerset.

Here is Kirsty, one of the lovely team at Maunsel House:

First a little background on Maunsel House itself -

Maunsel House is a magnificent 13th Century Manor set in 100 acres of stunning parkland at the heart of a sprawling 2,000 acre estate, comprising of farms, lakes, woodlands, walnut groves, orchards, Somerset wetlands, cottages and ancient barns.

(Maunsel House set up for the civil marriage ceremony of Michelle & Chris)

Currently the Ancestral seat of the Slade Family and home of Sir Benjamin Slade Bt. and Kirsty, the house can boast such visitors as Geoffrey Chaucer, who wrote part of the Canterbury Tales whilst staying here.

(The stunning King’s room – The Bridal Suite at Maunsel House – a fab place for the Bride to ready for her big day, and definite luxury for the wedding night! – from the wedding of Rachel & Chris)

The beautiful grounds and spacious rooms provide both privacy and a unique atmosphere for any event. Available for exclusive hire, we host weddings, house parties and corporate events with the house serving as a luxurious venue for groups of all sizes.

(Maunsel House at night – from the wedding of Rachel & Chris)

Our in-house wedding planners can organise every detail of your day – your ceremony and reception, catering and accommodation tailored to your specifications. Maunsel House serves equally well as a conference venue, with a range of facilities for corporate events and activity days.
In addition to the house’s 13 bedrooms, the estate includes three holiday cottages available for wedding guests and self-catering midweek breaks. Based near Taunton, Somerset, our estate is accessible from around the South West.

(The lovely bandstand available for outdoor ceremonies being used for garden entertainment at the wedding of Zena & Lee)

What’s Hot for 2010

A hot new trend for this year is the option of having as much of the wedding day as possible outside (weather permitting of couse )  At Maunsel House our civil ceremonies can take place under our romantic, garlanded, antique Bandstand.  The wisteria clad bandstand is situated on the front lawn with Maunsel House, our 13th century Manor house acting as a stunning backdrop along with our 100acre parkland setting and four lakes.

(Civil ceremony held in Maunsel House – The wedding of Michelle & Chris)

We always lay up for a civil ceremony inside the house as well,  just in case the weather takes a turn for the worse and this removes all the stress of having to make a decision as to where to have the ceremony.  Dinning al fresco is also hugely popular under our fully roofed Pergola.   The Pergola seats up to 200 for a wedding breakfast and is covered with deliciously scented climbing plants such as honeysuckle, jasmine and old roses and adds a very relaxed almost continental feel to the day.

(Wishes in the sky outside a floodlit Maunsel House, very atmospheric – from the wedding of Zena & Lee)

The evening can be rounded off with a scrumptious crackling covered hog roast which we can serve again from under the pergola.  As evening draws in we turn on our twinkling fairy lights and light the many chimneas and pretty lanterns in the fruit trees which surround the Pergola, all very romantic!

With all best wishes

Kirsty

Plan Your Wedding: Insider Info – What’s Hot for 2010 by Janet Waters of JW Blooms

Today’s article come from Janet Waters of JW Blooms. Janet does all things very lovely with naturally grown English flowers, ideal for those special wedding bouquets, decorating the church or beautiful centre pieces for your reception tables.

Here is Janet:

What’s Hot in Wedding Flowers?

Locally Grown Flowers!

We British are well-known for our love of gardens, but we are also big fans of cut flowers. Who hasn’t grabbed a bunch of tulips on impulse at the supermarket checkout or stopped at the florist for a few sweet peas for the kitchen table? But did you know that 90% of the flowers we buy are imported? Those roses you got on Valentine’s Day? Those lilies you bought for Mother’s Day? Chances are they started life in Colombia, were flown to Holland to be auctioned, and then ferried over to the UK.

Of course, where we really show our love of flowers is a wedding, and now brides -and the flower industry – are catching on to the idea of keeping your carbon footprint to a minimum by sourcing British flowers. Increasingly, the trend is for sustainable flowers, and this year local flowers are hot, hot, hot!

Three years ago, from a secluded field in Somerset, I set up JW Blooms, growing country flowers organically and as ethically as possible. I started off selling at farmers’ markets, but the demand for seasonal, local flowers meant that I soon started to do weddings, and that side of the business now takes up most of my time – and flowers.

Nothing complements a pretty village church like the kinds of fragrant, cottage flowers which would always have been grown in the surrounding gardens. Think fragrant snapdragons, vibrant cornflowers, love-in-a-mist and campanulas. Or towering delphiniums and bishop’s lace flower, interspersed with sweet-smelling honeysuckle and all bound together with a trail of flowering clematis – heavenly!

(some of Janets lovely creations from the wedding of Zena & Lee at Maunsel House last year)

With country-style flowers, just a few stems in a small jug can look incredibly pretty – and come in at a fraction of the price of a more formal arrangement!
Or if you’re looking for something more modern, what could be more striking than a few alliums tied with a sword-like phormium leaf? Whatever your taste, British flowers can fit the bill.

Of course, the business is seasonal and weather-dependent. I can’t provide hydrangeas in May or lilac in September, or guarantee that a particular flower will be at the perfect stage for picking on the day. But what I can guarantee is that the flowers will be beautiful, sweet-smelling, sumptuous and guilt-free!

(Another beautiful Bouquet by Janet from the wedding of Zena & Lee at Maunsel House 2009)

So if you’re getting married, give me a call – I am more than happy to talk about the possibilities. Or take a look at my website at www.jwblooms.co.uk. Make your wedding flowers truly green!

•    Textured; using crimps and then pinned, think lady gaga!

•    Rock chick-esque; dubbed the get out of bed look! Long tresses worn loosely and texturised from the mid lengths down.

•    Chic ponytail; a classic style that even hides a bad hair day!

•    Loose waves

•    New bob in town, gone the short edgy bob in the long more classic precision finish.
