I love my job. Not a day goes by without me thinking how lucky I am to be working in an industry steeped in happiness (and, let’s not forget, love!) and to work with women who are in a constant state of eager anticipation and brimming with positive hope for the future.
Incredibly, some of the most common feedback I get from my brides is that I’m a very calm person to have around. My husband cannot believe this, but it’s true. I strongly believe my previous working life in a pressurised, hectic, yet customer facing environment has given me the experience to be the voice of calm with my brides and their bridal parties.
I flew for 10 years with British Airways, both on long-haul and short haul flights and got to interact with people from all over the world. I was very interested in hair and makeup even then and my time as part of the global British Airways promotions team taught me an awful lot about presentation, grooming and appearance.

As much as I loved flying, the arrival of my second daughter prompted me to re-evaluate my life. So I said goodbye to the skies and decided to retrain and focus on my strengths. A gruelling 6 months later, I emerged ready to take on the world as a freelance make-up artist.
After working in TV and for a selection of magazines for a few years, I had an enquiry from a bride who needed hair and makeup for her wedding. What a trusting woman! Not having had any experience in weddings at that point, I was a little sceptical and apprehensive to say the least. Nevertheless, I agreed to help her and loved every second. More importantly, so did she it seemed. The rest is history.

Today, the bulk of Kaz Fernando Makeup’s business is bridal. We do, on average, 50 weddings a year and cover most of London and the South East, although we are happy to travel further afield if necessary. Ninety percent of our wedding work is both bridal makeup AND hair. The rest of the time we work with top photographers and we have come to specialise in vintage boudoir makeup. A vintage wedding hair and makeup job is my dream!
It was a great honour for me personally to win this year’s National Wedding Makeup Artist of the Year award in Central London, especially as the ‘votes’ were in fact detailed feedback from over 50 of my recent brides. Quite astonishing and very humbling.

But I’m very glad to say that bridal makeup is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Brides spend thousands on great photographers , the dress, the venue and everything else. But no matter how beautiful the dress, venue and photographs – if the bride looks slightly over made-up (or, as I have seen in some cases, like a clown!), then the memories can be tainted forever.
My philosophy is to help my brides be the most beautiful version of themselves that they can be on the day. None of us are Gisele Bundchen in the flesh (not even Gisele as it happens), but subtle, long lasting hair and makeup using only top quality products and applied by an expert make an enormous difference to the way brides look and feel.
So, don’t scrimp on the makeup ladies – it really is worth the small investment! Plus you get to be made up by people who, by and large, really, really love their work.
A bit like me.

wedding planner

It’s simple, we offer a totally bespoke service, so you know that your wedding will be fresh, inspired and tailored to your specifications and personality, not one straight out of a box. With over 9 years’ experience in the events industry planning events and weddings from 10 to 10,000 guests you’re in good hands with Passion 4 Events.

wedding planner

Bringing in a Wedding Planner from the outset of your plans will not only save you time, it will also save you money. At Passion 4 Events we do not take commissions from our suppliers, nor do we work on a percentage basis, we charge a pre-agreed fee to plan your wedding and pass on all our savings (in some cases up to 30%) directly to our clients, working with you to make the most out of your budget and create a wedding day you and your guests will remember for years to come.
We also understand that many brides may wish to plan their own wedding and so you can but at the same time leaving the stressful part to us! We offer a complementary consultation to discuss your ideas for the day and answer any questions you may have. This can then be followed up with a detailed quotation and budget planner, passing on all our trusted suppliers and savings, giving you complete peace of mind. Then when your wedding is planned to perfection, we offer an on-the-day service, where we will discuss all the finer details and be on site on the day of your wedding to ensure everything goes exactly as you’ve planned.

wedding planner

Let’s hear what one of our client thinks of the service we provided for her wedding:
“I just wanted to say a massive thank you for everything you did for us in the run up and on our wedding day, everything was perfect.  Everyone hasn’t stopped talking about it and telling me how much fun they had.  We both really enjoyed working with you and hope we can work together on future events.
On the day everything totally exceeded anything we could have dreamed of, so a massive thank you from both of us. Everything was first class, from the contacts you provided to the whole organisation, everything was fab.  I would have no hesitation in recommending you to friends, family, or anyone who will listen“ Alison Chesworth
In summary we are here to support you through the wedding planning process, ensuring it is an enjoyable process rather than a stressful one. We will make suggestions and provide you with helpful advice, but ultimately the final decisions will be yours.

Fantastic Mark, thank you.

Wedding Supplier Spotlight – Angela Smith Jewellery

A big welcome today to the lovely Angela Smith who makes wonderful jewellery creations…I’m no expert so I’ll let Angela tell you more!….

Hi, My name is Angela Smith and I knit tiaras, well at least that is was it says on my bio for Twitter, I actually do a lot more than that, as I hope you will discover as you continue reading this.
I love weddings, I have done so for as long as I can remember, my father was a registrar and he used to take me along to some of the church weddings he attended, I used to sit at the back of church and watch in awe as a beautiful princess would float past me in her stunning dress, towards her prince charming. I used to cry then and I still do, every time – but that is what weddings are about isn’t it?

wedding tiara

My own wedding was done on a budget, although it never felt as though it was as we were gifted the talents of our amazing friends for most of it. So a friend made and iced our three tier cake, her husband designed our invitations, another friend made my dress and the bridesmaids outfits, and another did my hair and make up for me and the list continues. Unfortunately, at that time, I didn’t make jewellery. It was the most wonderful day of my life apart from giving birth to my three amazing children.
My jewellery making didn’t start for another ten years, in fact not until a few months after the birth of my third child. I then realised that I would be at home for a few more years and I needed a hobby that would hopefully make me a bit of money too. I was given a book on beads as a Christmas present and my love affair with beads began – I then bought a kit to make myself 6 pairs of earrings and the rest, as they say, is history!

wedding tiara

Eighteen years later and I am still making jewellery, my designs have evolved since those early beginnings. My inspiration comes from things I see around me, from the colours in nature, to shapes and designs I see in everyday things and yes I do look at jewellery other people wear and this of course must influence me too. I make earrings, necklaces, bracelets in styles suitable for every day wear to more elaborate designs for evening wear and of course jewellery, tiaras and hair decorations for weddings  including some tiaras and crowns which  I have knitted – with wire though – not wool. I use quality beads including freshwater pearls, semi-precious beads and Swarovski crystals with wire or thread and I very rarely repeat a design so most items are totally unique.
Although a lot of my items are sold off the peg, I am also very happy to make commissioned items. Even after all these years I still get a huge amount of satisfaction from making something that is hopefully going to be a treasured for many years.

Wedding Supplier Spotlight – Brides & Beauty

A big welcome to the blog today to the lovely Joyce Conner from Brides and Beauty.

My story

How I got started
Well where do I start in 1995 I decided to go to visit my Mum who was living in New York at the time and working for Elizabeth Arden in Bloomingdales. I spent most of the time going to visit my Mum at Bloomingdales or going to Macy’s. Either way spent a lot of time in both of the department stores’ cosmetics departments.

When I got home in January 1996 I noticed the local college had a ‘Beauty Therapist’ course for mature students. You’re deemed mature if you’re over 19, I was 32! I gave up my job as a Nanny in the August and started as a full time student in September 1995.
The course was a 2 year course condensed into 1 year and covering all aspects of beauty therapy. I really enjoyed the course and at the end I was nominated as student of the year 1997. My prize was a years training at the renowned ‘International Dermal Institute’.

That gave me my step up for more training, and I’ve since completed nearly 100 other beauty and make up training courses. I set up business in 1997, just 2 months after leaving college and haven’t looked back since. Now I travel the world finding out what people use in other countries and seeking the secrets of eternal youth and beauty.

What sets me apart
In 2006 I decided to concentrate more on the bridal market and set up a new business called Brides and Beauty. I love make up and would buy it everyday if I had the time to do it. I noticed the lack of quality make up for professional use but the cosmetic industry has come on in leaps and bounds since then. I only use professional make up on brides because of its longevity on the skin and higher pigment content. I researched it a lot to make sure I got the right non clogging formulas that lasted for 12 hours and are photographic at the same time. I am proud to say that we can do make up and hair for every skin tone!

Weddings
I have a new idea about creating looks for brides everyday. My make up kit has grown so much over the years, so that I can give the bride any look they want. I love weddings because every bride is unique and individual. I get to know them and on the day I am one of the last suppliers to see them before hey walk down the aisle. It’s the best feeling for the bride and me.

A typical wedding day!!
The night before I make sure all the paperwork is in order. I clean the brushes and check that all of the make up is packed in my kit. I gather all the paperwork and print off a map if I need one and get the sat nav ready.
The arrival time is pre arranged with the bride before the day. I hate being late so make sure I leave myself enough time to get there.
On arrival we meet and great the bride and whoever else is having hair and make up. The bridesmaids are done first so that they can go off and get ready. We will do the bride in the middle to accommodate the photographers schedule so that he can then go off and take photos of the groom.

wedding makeup

Once everyone is ready the bride gets into her dress and if she needs us to assist we will. The veil is placed in her hair with instructions give to one of the bridal party on how to remove it later. The bride’s hair and make up will last for 12 hours with only the lipstick needing to be topped up. Once the bride and the bridal party is ready to leave we depart for home. Occasionally we do an evening return for the guests to top up make up. This is a 2 or 3 hour evening session and is a very popular service! I get home and sign off the paperwork. Clean my brushes and put it all away!

Wedding Supplier Spotlight – Daisy

Today I am delighted to introduce you to the very lovely Tara Cole AKA Daisy Icecream van!

icecream van for your vintage wedding

If you fancy something a little bit different at your wedding, party or event how about inviting along Daisy, my beautifully renovated vintage ice cream van.  I had a mad idea of rescuing  a clapped out ice cream van on Ebay last year and giving her a new lease of life, I had no idea how much fun, hard work and exciting times it would lead to, or how much I would learn about diesel engines and mechanics!!

vintage icecream van for your wedding

After lots of TLC and a lot of luck with some amazingly clever, talented people, Daisy has emerged as the prettiest ice cream van you will ever see, in cream, chrome and lilac I dress her up with fresh flowers and vintage style bunting and add a personal message on the back window for my Wedding couples.  She is fully stocked with heavenly Cotswold ice creams and sorbets with luxury waffle cornets, retro ice lollies, retro sweets, and for the evenings and cooler months hot chocolate, mulled wine and hot toddy’s.  Daisy is now fully licensed so you can even hire her as your Champagne bar.

wedding icecream van

I’ve never known anything to get such a fabulous reaction as Daisy does, and it’s the adults that come back four times, the children are always very well behaved!!  Daisy now has her own power supply and hidden behind a vintage stereo is an iPod so I can even personalise her music, usually she plays rock n roll and Motown tunes from the 40s through to the 70s.  To give the whole thing even more of a vintage 50s feel I dress up in full 1950s dress to really set the whole thing off.

wedding icecream van

I really like to give Daisy a personal touch for all my wedding couples so I match in with colour schemes and flowers whenever I can and you get to choose the flavours of ice creams and sorbets, I’ve added diabetic friendly ice creams too and do a little pot for the wheat intolerant.  You can even have a personalised ice cream sundae for your wedding and a Daisy T shirt as a souvenir of your special day.

wedding vintage icream van

I work out the costing for hiring Daisy based on the number of guests, the distance to travel to the venue and the treats you would like served, that costing covers 2 hours of serving unlimited deliciousness to your guests, you can book her for longer I just work out an hourly rate, and that’s it, no hidden costs or nasty surprises. Your deposit guarantees the date to you and you can book for the daytime or the evening when Daisy has her twinkly lights and lanterns.

I can’t wait for the wedding season to really get going, plus we have the Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year, and Daisy is certainly proving to be very popular for those.

Wedding Supplier Spotlight – JW Blooms

Today’s wedding supplier spotlight is firmly switched on to the lovely Janet from JW Blooms….

Life as a Flower Grower and Florist

For years, like millions, I sat at a desk and typed all day for a living. Those days seem far behind me. Now I grow flowers.

When I first thought of starting JW Blooms, I envisaged running a regular stall at several farmers’ markets and supplying flower stands at local shops. Now, four years down the line, experience has taught me to avoid doing stalls if at all possible (way too much work for the rewards) and that stands in shops are just stalls with people who don’t care about the flowers as much as I do probably neglecting them.

english grown wedding flowers

These days, the bulk of my business comes from weddings and so, without really planning it, I have also become a florist. It’s a job of two halves. In the winter, from my secluded flower field in Somerset, I plan, rearrange, shovel, clear, weed and wonder if my fingernails will ever be clean again.  It’s hard work and I must admit there are times when the cold, the aching back and the financial instability make me ponder the possibility that a desk job might be preferable. But most days I look at my “office” and find it hard not to whoop with joy. To be outside all year round, aware of every little change in the season, using your muscles, nurturing seedlings and plants and knowing you’re doing it in an ethical, sustainable way is life-enhancing and truly something to be grateful for.

And then, come spring, the other half of the job kicks in. Yes, the growing and, especially, the weeding carries on, but the main focus shifts to weddings. Just like the growing side of things, wedding floristry is much harder work than it sounds. Everything has to be done at the last minute and it isn’t unusual for me to cram what most people think of as a week’s work into three days. On top of that, unlike conventional florists, whose flowers come already cut and conditioned, my floristry work is preceded by hours of back-breaking picking, trimming and prep work, usually at the crack of dawn. But – also like the growing side of things – overall it’s a privilege. Weddings are gloriously happy occasions. Working with people who are excited about their plans and about the new life they are about to embark upon is such a pleasure. Goodwill and optimism abound. I especially love the day before – preparing and creating on site, surrounded by excited, happy guests, full of joy. It’s fantastic!

English grown wedding flowers

Buying your wedding flowers from a local small grower is still a novel idea for many people and, especially when it is one of the biggest days of your life, you might be nervous about entrusting it to someone who invites you to a shed for your initial consultation! But don’t worry, the product is glorious and, by doing your bit to help expand the market, maybe you will be creating more opportunities for other people to spend their lives as I do. And that would be a fine thing!

Wedding Supplier Spotlight – Celebration Invitations

Welcome to the blog Helen from Celebration Invitations :-)

Hi, I’m Helen from Celebration Invitations,  I have an internet  business based  in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. I live in  Embsay, near Skipton, North Yorkshire.
My business has grown out of a love of my  12 year old  Crafting hobby.   A very popular thing now a days, through need and /or desire.  My story is no exception.
My son and wife asked me to produce their wedding stationery for their Wedding at Cricklade Hotel and Country club.
Day Invitation
Evening Invitation

My daughter and her husband had their son’s Christening reception at the fabulous Coniston Hotel, Coniston cold and asked if I
would do the invitations.

My love of crafting and weddings began to bring enquiries from people to  produce  bespoke stationery and so encouraged me to develop the business.
Here is a very small selection of some of my work.  I have produced work for weddings in many fabulous English venues, Ireland, America and Cyprus to mention a few.

I am quite happy to produce stationery to any stage, for clients as items  often have  to be transported to a venue which can sometimes be literally thousand of miles away.  It has to travel well and be easily assembled by the customer so’s not to take up all there time ‘cutting and sticking’, when they really want to be enjoying themselves on their  big day.

My service until recently has been solely bespoke where I produce a selection of stationery unique to the clients.  Some people know exactly what they are looking for whilst other need inspiration so I aim to help in presenting several ideas usually on copy paper first and let things develop from there.  It injects the true personality of the couple into their big day and of course it sets the scene for their guests.

I always ask couples if they are happy for me to put images of their stationery collections into the public domain and they are usually happy for me to do that.  I never do this until after they are home from their honeymoon, so it doesn’t spoil any surprises.
The  one exception to my rule is from perhaps one of the most organised brides I have ever had.  She came to me in 2011 for a wedding in 2013 knowing exactly what she wanted.  It’s a Monochrome wedding theme and looks stunning so just this once I’ve asked to share it and thankfully she agreed.
Of course she can’t fill in the place names until she receives the RSVP but is enlisting  a friend who’s a calligrapher for that.  Being so far in advance she has been able to spread the cost and stay within her budge.  Something I’m very keen to help with, if possible, having been their twice with my own family, I know it can be quite a strain especially now a days.

In  January 2012 I have had my website redesigned and will be increasing the services I  offer to include a  ‘do it  yourself’  and ‘off the peg’ sections.  I am fully aware of the need  for this type of service as people want to have and input into ‘their day’ and be proud of their achievements, it’s also a way to keep the cost down.  So I hope this will help.  I’m keeping my bespoke service too as it’s been  very popular  and I’m hoping the website will in time become a resource of information and help to people.
I use only top quality products  to produce my stationery, purchasing as much as possible from local or British made manufacturers and try and chose my card and papers carefully with the knowledge it is from a sustainable source.

Finally, here’s a sample from one of my Summer Weddings at the fabulous Devonshire Arms Hotel in Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire.  It’s only a ‘stones through’ away from me but I’m able to produce work for anywhere in or out of the country.
